ভালোভাবে প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে GRE পরীক্ষায় যারা বসতে চাচ্ছেন তাদের জন্য একটা সুখবর আছে। “ম্যাগাজিন অক্টোপাস”-এর একটি টিম সবসময় GRE পরীক্ষার বর্তমান ট্রেন্ড এবং প্রশ্নপত্রের উপর খোঁজখবর রাখছে। প্রায় প্রতিদিনই আপনাদের জন্য লেসন তৈরি করে দেও্রয়া হবে। আজকে একটি লেসন দেওয়া হল।
মার্চ-২০১৫ থেকে আগস্ট-২০১৫ পর্যন্ত অনুষ্ঠিত GRE পরীক্ষার প্রশ্নপত্র গবেষণা করে দেখা গেছে নিচের দশটি শব্দ সবচে’ বেশিবার পরীক্ষায় এসেছে।

1. Gambit

Meaning: A gambit is a move or action (generally in chess) in which you risk something initially in the hope of future gain.
অর্থ : সাহসী পদক্ষেপ, অর্থাৎ ভবিষ্যতে ভালো ফল মিলবে এমন প্রত্যাশায় বর্তমানে রিস্ক নেওয়া।

Mnemonic: Gambit sounds like “gamble”, and indeed there is an element of risk involved in gambling.
মনে রাখার উপায় : শব্দটি gambling-এর সাথে সম্পর্কিত ভাবা যায়।
gambling-এর সাথেও রিস্ক-এর বিষয় জড়িত রয়েছে।

Usage: It is a gambit to skip all hard questions on the GRE exam and do the easier ones first in order to save time – on a harder section nearly all questions are hard and you may end up skipping all questions and wasting more time consequently.
ব্যবহার : GRE পরীক্ষায় কঠিন প্রশ্নগুলো নিয়ে মাথা না ঘামিয়ে প্রথমে সহজ প্রশ্নগুলো উত্তর করাকে gambit বলা যায়।

2. Umbrage

Meaning: offense or annoyance
অর্থ : বিরক্তি

Mnemonic: Notice the last 4 Letter RAGE which means anger.
মনে রাখার উপায় : শব্দটির শেষ চারটি বর্ণ (rage) খেয়াল করুণ। rage অর্থ রাগ। Umbrage শব্দের অর্থের সাথে মিল রয়েছে।

Usage: Ali took umbrage at the prank that his friends played on him.
ব্যবহার : তাকে নিয়ে তার বন্ধু কৌতুক করায় আলী বিরক্ত হয়েছিল। খেয়াল করুণ- umbrage শব্দটি noun, এজন্য তা বাক্যে সেভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

3. Dander
Meaning: a feeling of anger and animosity
অর্থ : বিগড়ানো মেজাজ
Mnemonic (মনে রাখার কৌশল): Just think of Dandruff
Usage: Don’t get your dander up if you get a low GRE score.

4. Exonerate
Meaning: release someone from a blame
অর্থ : দায়মুক্তি দেওয়া
Mnemonic: Ex(old) + Honor means to get back your old/lost honour
Usage: The job of a lawyer is to exonerate his clients and keep them out of jail and away from punishment.

5. Tempestuous
Meaning: characterized by strong and turbulent or conflicting emotion, heated, stormy
অর্থ : ঝড়ো (আবেগ)
Usage: Lacking the tempestuousness of Ahmed, Ali in his debates was always calm.

6. Subterfuge
Meaning: deceit used in order to achieve one’s goal, dishonesty, guile
অর্থ : ছল করা
Usage: Any subterfuge on the GRE exam would be immediately apparent, much to the embarrassment of the student concerned.

7. Deference
Meaning: humble submission and respect
অর্থ : শ্রদ্ধা/ভক্তি
Mnemonic: There is a DIFFERENCE between us and rich people, that is why we respect them.
Usage: The students nodded in deference as the teacher approached.
ব্যবহার : শিক্ষককে আসতে দেখে শিক্ষার্থীরা শ্রদ্ধায় মাথা নুইয়ে ছিল।

8. Goad
অর্থ : প্ররোচিত করা
Usage : Media has been used to goad people of like minds into believing their false agenda.
ব্যবহার : গণমাধ্যম তাদের ভুয়া খবর বিশ্বাস করানোর জন্য আমা জনতাকে প্ররোচিত করে আসছে।

9. Contrite
Meaning: feeling remorse or affected by guilt
অর্থ : অনুতপ্ত
Mnemonic (মরে রাখার উপায়) : COUNT THE CASH RIGHT, ELSE YOU WILL REGRET IT.
Usage: The ETS was noticeably contrite and apologized to the GRE test taker for the countless technical difficulties and no air conditioning.
GRE পরীক্ষার্থীদের পরীক্ষা নেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে নানান ধরনের কারিগরি ত্রুটি হওয়ায় এবং রুমে তাপ নিয়ন্ত্রণের ব্যবস্থা না থাকায় ETS কর্তৃপক্ষ আসলেই অনুতপ্ত এবং ক্ষমাপ্রার্থী হয়েছিল।
